Types of Photography
There are many different types of photography techniques and procedures out there. Professional photography is not easy and takes years of practice and learning to get good at it, but that does not mean it cannot be done. As experience is the best teacher, the more you “click”, the better you will get. Let’s discuss a few different types to better understand this broad term.
• Artistic photography: This deals with capturing visualisation for creative purposes.
• Adventure photography: This is taken during adventure sports or other daring escapades.
• Black & white photography: This explores not just clicking in black and white mode, but also understanding shapes, lighting, effects, etc.
• Architecture & real estate: This involves taking attractive pictures of properties and architectural marvels. This makes use of Panoramic Photography.
• Aerial: This photography is taken from the air, that is, by means of a helicopter, plane, air balloon, etc. • Digiscoping: This is the art of taking photos through binoculars or a telescope.
• Camera phone: This new age technology allows you to take pictures with the use of your mobile phone. This makes taking a picture very easy and convenient.
• Documentary and journalism photography.
• Commercial photography: Done to capture commercial products for advertising.
• Event covering photography: This involves covering events and parties, exhibitions, festivals, etc.
• Medical photography: This is specialised photography for medical purposes to help diagnose diseases and inspect injuries.
• Natural photography: This captures the natural beauty and landscapes all around us.
• Billboard, posters, etc, all require large format photography.
• Panoramic photography is required to take wide angle photos.
• Amateur photography is the one taken by any newcomer or non-professional.
• Cityscape and landscape photography.
• Kirlian photography is a unique and different way of taking pictures. It places the object touching a certain photographic plate, which is connected to high voltage, which then results in an aura created around the object. This is often confused with aura photography.
• Aura Photography: This makes claims to be able to capture a person’s aura in a photo.
• Pet and Animal Photography: This involves taking pictures of animals and of pets with their owners.
• Infrared photography is another type that involves a recording medium, which is infrared sensitive as opposed to normal light.
• Astrophotography is the art of taking space photos with the use of a telescope.
• Underwater photography is done with a camera placed in a water tight house or case.
• Photography of people for say fashion, portraits, magazines, passports, sports, etc.
• Night photography requires special techniques and sometimes includes infrared techniques.
• Paranormal photography deals with capturing photos of ghosts and supernatural phenomena, etc.
• Satellite photos are taken from the space of the Earth.

I would like to start shooting Daguerreotype portraits. Competitors are asking $600 for 1/4 plate. Do for less?
Do you think I could do it for less? Not sure how I would go about figuring my cost. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks. I know how to do them. I've been doing dags for about a year.
The only pro photography I've ever done is landscape not portraiture.
You asked how to figure cost: I'll assume direct costs, although you do also have to consider overhead.
So, how much does the raw plate cost? Add that to:
Incremental chemistry cost: How many plates can be processed in, for example, 1 gallon of chemistry? Multiply this out and divide over the number of plates to reach a per plate cost.
Are there any special items required that you bought just for dags? (Grinder, trays, mixing implements and beakers). Add the cost of these in and divide over a reasonable # of expected dags to be made in one year's time.
Figure out mounting costs: dag cases, glass.
Finally, packaging and shipping costs.
Add all of the above together then add 20% for waste, experimentation, tests. This figure should be a reasonable estimate of the direct cost. (It is an estimate because of item 3.)
Then figure out how much time you spend on each dag. There is
planning time - talking with client, setting up shoot, and doing the preproduction (Lights, studio etc.) Do you own studio equipment? Add the cost of this in over a year and divide over total number of expected portraits (dag and paper) to get a per image/sitting cost.
Plate preparation time
Shoot time
Plate development and mounting time.
Packaging/shipping time.
Come up with a reasonable rate per hour for this work: What would you be paid to do this at someone else's studio? Use this amount and multiply by hours spent and assign this as your direct labor cost.
Add these together and you have total direct cost (estimate).
Subtract this amount from your potential selling price(s). The difference is gross profit (margin). Try to not let the direct costs exceed 40% and you should be okay. That leaves 60% for overhead and profit - you should clear 30% to be able to provide for equipment replacement and expansion over time as well as put some food on the table.
All that being said, I think $600 is a fair price for a dag portrait, maybe a little cheap. You have the sitting fee for the portrait, and the costs of a dag far exceed a paper print. So I don't think you should charge less than the competition, just outshoot them.
